Mobile Light Colour Centre

Originally Funded by the Australian Arts Council, Artspace Residency and Woollahra Council Residency.

Muuse Collections Creative Director Julie Masterton founded Australia's Mobile Light Colour Centre that explores light and colour in the Australian Landscape, its effect on vision– and considers its significance as a contemporary cultural material.

Some of the elements it explores are optical phenomena and patternation found through light and line in landscape – considering its significance as a contemporary cultural material. The research may result in vibrant optical pattern sculptures and photography that are published, exhibited and sold directly through Muuse Collection in collaboration with Design, hotels and Interiors.

The physical sensation of the artworks are drawn from effects found on the eye through squinting, staring, afterimages, imprints left on vision effected by looking directly into light, and the movement of line in the landscape. The photographic research explores formations and patternation effects of rocks & waves referred to as skins. Often using chromatic techniques of identifiable hues or by selecting achromatic colors (black, white or grey) to heighten the viewer’s visual awareness of pattern over image. In doing so, the artworks may appears to flicker, pulsate and move, encouraging the viewer’s visual tension or engaging a slight flickering effect. "For me, says Masterton, and in the aesthetic research we do; the play of light, colour, transparency and reflection are tools to create a static object which you don’t experience as static. Our goal is to document unseen aspects of the Australian colour range and light spectrums unique to Australia."
